Grella, substituted at half-time of the opening match against Germany, injured his knee in training on Wednesday and has been ruled out of the must-win game against Ghana in Rustenburg, and must be in some doubt for the final group game against Serbia in Nelspruit next Wednesday.

Football Federation Australia confirmed on Thursday that Grella's troublesome knee has flared up and that he would sit out the match against Ghana, while his prospects for the game against Serbia will be assessed later on.

It is another setback for Grella, who has struggled with injury over the past 12 months and has started in just 10 games for club side Blackburn Rovers.

Tim Cahill is the other player unavailable for the Ghana match, through suspension.
