The popular Central Coast General Manager of Football who coached the Mariners to multiple finals and grand finals over the first five seasons of the A-League, took to Twitter this morning to announce his political plans.

"I have just announced that I will be standing for gosford council in the local elections on Sept 8 as an independent," he announced on his Twitter page this morning.

He is hoping locals get behind "Team McKinna" and it's understood he has the backing of his A-League club

When quizzed by au.fourfourtwo.com, McKinna said he was proud of Gosford and the Central Coast and wanted to do what's best for the area.

"I'm running as an independent because I want to do what's best for the community. It's local council so it's all about local issues.

"Too many people here have to travel three hours a day to Sydney for work. Boosting jobs is very important.

"I feel I've become part of the community up here. I've become a citizen and I"m here for the long-term so if I can help in any way with this beautiful part of the world, then I'd be happy to."

McKinna heads a five-member independent team featuring Sue Dengate, Nick Hagistefanis, Deb Warwick and Gabby Bowles.

Their slogan will be,  "Independents Kicking Goals For Gosford"

In a statement released today, McKinna said the independent team were about common sense with a fresh approach.

"My team is a great team. I have youth, experience and above all, which I think is very important, I have a women's perspective. I have three strong women who will contribute to my campaign.

"I feel there have been some elements of the council who have not focused on the overall good of the city. I think I bring common sense. I bring a game plan. I want to focus on goals and objectives. I want to be able to work in with other levels of the government to get the best outcomes for this council."

Watch out for a special interview with McKinna in the A-League issue of FourFourTwo magazine out on Sept 5.
