Vukovic is expected to replace fellow Aussie Mat Ryan at Belgian side Racing Genk, with Ryan headed to Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 32-year old has forced his way into Socceroo contention recently on the back of an outstanding season with the Sky Blues.

Now that he is in the national team set-up, Vukovic is desperate to stay there and potentially snag a spot in the World Cup qualifier in two months time.

“I’ve got my foot in the door now and I want to stay here,” the keeper said.

“Playing in Australia, although I’ve been playing well, I’m on a level playing field with all the Australian keepers there. Playing overseas is a different story. I think the level of football in Europe is considered better so I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“Some people might think it’s a bit of a risk but it's something that I've wanted since I was a little kid. Also coming into a World Cup year, playing overseas in a good league I think will help my chances.”

Vukovic, who has played for Central Coast, Perth, Wellington, Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC in his career, said he has always dreamed of playing in Europe.

“It’s just an opportunity I always wanted,” he admitted.

“I wasn’t actively seeking a move overseas but it just eventuated. It’s a dream come true. I’m very happy that it’s happening. Mat’s done well in Belgium and he’s made a good name for himself in Europe as well.

“We’ve got good goalkeepers and Australia’s always had good goalkeepers. All over Europe we’ve had success with our players. We’ve got a good name over there.”

Vukovic had a difficult spell overseas in Japan with Vegalta Sendai in 2014, failing the make a first-team appearance in five months. Vukovic said he has learned from that challenging experience.

“I suppose I did,” he said.

“(But) I was there by myself, this time I will have my family with me. We’re looking forward to it, it’s something new for us."
