Danny Vukovic has played in both the Sydney and Melbourne derbies, but he believes the Sydney derby is the best and biggest of the two A-League contests.
Vukovic, who hails from western Sydney originally, spent the 2015/2016 season with Melbourne Victory before joining Sydney FC. He helped the Sky Blues win the double before heading to Belgian club Genk in June.
The goalkeeper said the encounter between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, which takes place Saturday in round three, is number one.
“The Sydney derby is bigger, in my opinion,” the 32-year-old told FourFourTwo.
“I'm sure there' varying opinions out there, but I think the fact that both the Sydney teams are very well supported. With the Melbourne derby, it’s a one-sided derby in terms of the support with Victory having the majority of the supporters.
“I’m sure it’s going to be a sellout this Saturday night at Allianz and I have no doubt it’s going to be a wonderful atmosphere as well. I’m looking forward to the Sky Blues getting the win.”
Vukovic enjoyed a fantastic season in 2016/2017 with Sydney FC and believes his former club can successfully defend their title in the new campaign.
Graham Arnold's men have started well with two wins from their first two games.
“I’m thinking they’re going to go back-to-back,” he said.
“I honestly can’t see over the course of a 27-round season a team keeping up with them. I think they’re going to be consistent again this year, the depth in the squad is good again.
“Arnie’s recruited really well and I’m confident they’re going to do really well. Some of the other teams can come close to them but they’re going to be too consistent over the 27 rounds.”
