With Sydney FC on the cusp of breaking the record for most league points in a season, Sky Blues goalkeeper Danny Vukovic says the club doesn’t want to waste the opportunity.
Vukovic has been in career best form this season and his performances in between goals have helped Sydney break the A-League defensive records for most clean sheets, fewest goals conceded and best goal difference.
If the Sky Blues beat Newcastle Jets on Saturday, they will also claim the record for the most points and biggest premier’s margin to add to their record for most wins.
Vukovic’s form saw him gain selection for the recent Socceroos squad and the record-breaking 32-year-old said he was revelling in the history-making moment
“It’s a special feeling because the season that we’ve had does not come all too often.,” he said speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo.
“It means a lot. I’ve been a professional now for 15 years and this is the first time that this has happened.
“There is certainly a feeling within the camp that we have a chance to achieve something special and break these records and things like that
“When you have that feeling amongst a team, everyone works even harder to try to achieve it.
“We can sense that we have something special going on and we’re not leaving any stone unturned because we don’t want to waste this opportunity.”
With Sydney having the most miserly defence in the history of the A-League, Vukovic said the team’s defensive structure had been the secret to the Sky Blues' success
“It’s been the number one contributor,” he said.
“If you’re not conceding goals then you’re not losing games and not dropping points. We’ve built our structure and our team around that.
“It starts from the front, our number nine – Bobo or Simon, whoever is playing up front – they get through a lot of defensive work first and foremost.
“We have a solid back four with some international players in there. Our two sixes work tirelessly – they get through so much work defensively to break up plays.
“The stats show that what they’re doing is nullifying attacks before they even get to me. That’s a great start and we’ve scored a lot of goals from winning the ball back from high areas.”
Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque lauded Vukovic’s contribution, highlighting the confidence the Sky Blues have when the opposition finds a way through the team’s defensive line.
“The few times they do breakthrough we know that Vukovic is there,” he said speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo.
“I feel that confident in Vuka that even though they are through and are one on one with him, I just know they are not going to score.
“To have that confidence in a goalkeeper and to know that you got a goalkeeper is going to stop them nine time out of ten is great.”
