There were some phenomenal contests, cracking goals and defining upsets to kick off the first round of W-League 2017/18. Here’s how each team fared:
NEWCASTLE FLATTEN WESTERN SYDNEY IN SWELTERING CONDITIONS
Boiling conditions at McDonald Jones Stadium couldn’t suppress a cracking W-League contest between Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers.
Drink breaks and long balls were the order of the day in the Hunter as Newcastle Jets kicked off their W-League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Western Sydney.
PERTH GLORY RUN RIOT OVER MELBOURNE CITY
There was only one winner in the battle between Samantha Kerr and Kyah Simon, as Kerr’s Perth Glory ran out 4-1 victors over their title rivals.
It was a phenomenal round one clash, between two of the strongest teams in the W-League this season, and despite the late kick off at NIB Stadium the match certainly didn’t disappoint.
BRISBANE ROAR SWEAT OUT VICTORY AGAINST SYDNEY FC
On a balmy Sydney afternoon, Brisbane Roar kicked off the W-League 2017/18 season with a bang, defeating Sydney FC 3-1 at Allianz Arena thanks to a first minute strike from Katrina Gorry and a brace from Allira Toby.
The Sky Blues looked like they might make an unlikely comeback after Emily Sonnett coolly converted a penalty on the 80th minute, but Sydney’s surge didn’t last long – Toby struck with a header four minutes later to put the result beyond doubt.
VICTORY SCRAPE WIN OVER CANBERRA UNITED
Melbourne Victory are off to the perfect start, while Michelle Heyman goal couldn’t help Canberra avoid defeat.
Victory scraped over the line against Canberra United, narrowly notching a 2-1 victory in front of an elated home crowd thanks to strikes from Victory new signing Kristen McNabb and Natasha Dowie.
