The demolition destroyed Glory’s opportunity to move to the top of the table - the contest all over at half-time as Canberra found themselves 5-0 up.

Ash Sykes was central to the action after she scored four goals (6’, 20’, 45+1’, 46’) and opened with the first two of the game.

Steph Ochs gave Canberra a three-goal lead in the 23rd minute when she chipped Melissa Maizels and shortly after Young Matilda Grace Maher made it curtains for Perth.

Canberra had a seven goal cushion when Hayley Raso got involved in the 49th minute and Sykes received a standing ovation minutes later when Matilda veteran Lisa De Vanna replaced her.

To Glory’s credit, they did not give up as consolation goals came from Vanessa Di Bernardo (57’) and Matilda Sam Kerr (79’).

Adelaide's Adriana Jones wins the ball

Adelaide United 10 Western Sydney Wanderers 2

Adelaide United have claimed their first win of the season in extraordinary fashion after smashing Western Sydney Wanderers 10-2 at home.

Adrianna Jones (28’, 65’, 83’) and Mexican international Sofia Huerta (49’, 77’, 78) both claimed hat-tricks while Rachel Quigley scored a brace (19’, 69’).

Young Matilda Alex Chidiac (74’) and late substitute Ally Ladas (89’) were the other goal scorers for the Reds.

A Sarah Willacy own goal (17’) and Erica Halloway’s goal (59’) ended up being the only consolation for the Wanderers.

Interestingly enough it was the Wanderers who found the lead after the Reds’ failed to deal with a corner leaving goalkeeper Willacy to claim the own goal.

Quigley then quickly replied with an equaliser and shortly after Jones’ penalty in the 28th minute helped United secure a 2-1 lead at the break.

The Reds continued to pile on the pressure in the second half as Huerta managed to make it 3-1 in the 49th minute before the Red and Black made it a one-goal deficit before the hour mark.

United would go on to score seven more goals to embarrass the Wanderers and to claim their first win of the season.

Jets celebrate Jennifer Hoy's goal

Newcastle Jets 2 Brisbane Roar 1

A last minute Jennifer Hoy winner has seen Newcastle Jets claim their third win of the season after a thrilling 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in Sunday’s double header at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The game was deadlocked before substitute Rhali Dobson combined with Hoy (90+2’) to send 2,146 fans wild in Newcastle.

It was Brisbane who began the game strongly but the Jets who took the lead in the 10th minute when Grace MacIntyre’s corner found Hoy’s to open the scoring. The goal was then recorded as an own goal as replays suggested it came off Summer O’Brien last.

It remained even after the opener, with Katrina Gorry and Emily Gielnik snuffed out by the Jets.

But Roar got their equaliser before half-time as Tameka Butt clashed with Cassidy Davis in the box. The spot kick was then converted by the Matilda as Katelyn Rowland got a hand to it.

Roar looked like coming away with the win until Gorry’s goalbound free kick was denied by Rowland with 10 minutes remaining.

The drama continued when a dubious decision by referee Katie Patterson saw goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold sent-off for taking down Hoy in the box. Arin Gilliland’s spot kick was then denied by substitute custodian Georgina Worth.

But the Jets still grabbed the winner when Dobson’s cut back found Hoy who struck it past Worth.

Victory celebrate derby goal

Melbourne Victory 2 Melbourne City 0

Melbourne Victory have created history by winning their first W-League Melbourne Derby after downing the crosstown rivals 2-0 at Epping Stadium.

City are now winless in six games after previously holding an undefeated record prior to the 2-1 loss to Canberra United at home in the beginning of December.

Tash Dowie opened the scoring straight away after cutting into the box and drilling it past Lydia Williams in the first minute.

And just after the half hour mark Christine Nairn made the most of a short corner as her curling shot went over the head of Williams to double the lead.

Minutes later Beverly Yanez had a header which should have gone in but was cleared off the line by Sam Johnson.

City would continue to knock on the door as Jess Fishlock hit the frame of the woodwork before half-time.

The visitors were running out of ideas before a golden opportunity came with four minutes remaining to pull a goal back after Aivi Luik was fouled in the box. The spot kick however was blasted wide by Fishlock.

Victory now remain eighth on the table while City missed out on an opportunity to guarantee a place in the finals.
