Melbourne Victory W-League coach Jeff Hopkins admits his players are lacking confidence after losing their fourth consecutive game this season.
Victory have only travelled once this campaign and lost 2-0 at home to Perth Glory on the weekend in a game where Hopkins said they “never really got going”.
Hopkins said the only positive he took out of the loss was the performance by second-choice goalkeeper Beth Mason-Jones who stood in for her second game in place of Bianca Henninger who accumulated a knee injury last week.
“I think there was an opportunity for us to get back on track and it’s made it pretty hard for us now,” Hopkins said.
“I don’t want to name anyone, I don’t think it’s a time for pointing fingers at people, as a team we just didn’t perform against Perth.
“Looking at it, one or two players were lacking a bit of confidence there the players are really disappointed in there.
“We all understand we can give so much better, so I just said to the girls now, this is where your character shows, we’ve lost a few games on the trot now.”
The Victory won just two games last season and claimed the wooden spoon.
Hopkins said there was a genuine feeling of enthusiasm heading into the game against Perth, adding they could not contain Matilda and Glory striker Sam Kerr.
The Victory boss conceded they ran out of ideas and and failed to find structure in the second half.
“The one thing we have in the team is honesty and the players are really disappointed in the general performances,” he said.
“We all thought today was going to be a really good performance, you guarantee the result, but the performance I was hoping was going to be a really positive one and it didn’t happen.
“We’re always going to create chances, I thought the way we went about the game, the style of play, we were way too direct and we gave the ball away way too often.
“We looked a desperate team right from the start where we really need to have a look at a bit more composure in the way we build our chances.”
Victory play Western Sydney Wanderers back at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday.
