Newcastle Jets W-League team have claimed their first win in season 2016/17 defeating Melbourne Victory 4-0 away at Lakeside Stadium.
Goals to Megan Oyster (8’), Arin Gilliland (15’), Emma Stanbury (23’) and a final goal by Jenna Kingsley (90+1) was enough to get the Jets over the line after dominating play for the whole game.
The Jets will be pleased with their start to the season after a 1-0 loss to reigning champions Melbourne City.
The outcome could have been different from the start however, as former Liverpool striker Tash Dowie almost put Victory in front after five minutes only to be denied by Kelsey Wys.
Three minutes later the Jets took the lead as Oyster’s direct free kick flew into the bottom left corner evading Bianca Henninger.
While the only positives Victory could take was Dowie’s enthusiastic runs, they failed to pick up any rhythm on their passing.
In the 15th minute Newcastle doubled their advantage courtesy of American Gilliland who headed it home from a Gema Simon corner.
It was three for the Jets minutes later after Victory’s defender Alexandra Cheal played a poor back pass to Henninger which was picked up by Emma Stanbury who punished the home side.
The visitors continued to press as a scramble in the penalty area had the ball dropping Stanbury whose shot was taken while Henninger was out position, the ball struck the cross bar and nearly rebounded back into the goal off Cheal, but went out for a corner much to her relief.
Newcastle continued the second half as Elizabeth O’Reilly’s header from a corner just flew wide of the Victory goal.
Victory almost pulled one back against the flow on the hour mark when Dowie played in Lia Privitelli whose final shot struck the crossbar.
Despite the near miss, Victory’s balls were getting intercepted time and time again with Newcastle unable to penetrate the goal.
In the final two minutes of the game, Henninger pulled off an impressive save after palming away Cassidy Davis’ venomous shot from distance.
A defensive blunder once again hurt Victory with Kingsley picking up the scraps to make it 4-0 to end a dirty night for the home side.
They now return home next week to partake in the Big Blue with Sydney FC while the Jets have their first home game of the season against Perth Glory in a double header with the A-League’s F3 Derby at McDonald Jones Stadium.
