Sydney FC’s W-League team have surged to joint top of the table with Newcastle Jets after a 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory at Lakeside Stadium.
An opening free kick from Alanna Kennedy (17’) and a subsequent goal from 16-year-old Remy Siemsen (35’) were enough to get the Sky Blues over the line, backing up their Sydney Derby win last week.
Natasha Dowie claimed a consolation goal for Victory at the end (83’).
Matilda centre-back Kennedy almost got herself onto the scoresheet after the eighth minute after heading the ball into the crossbar.
Natasha Dowie had two good chances in quick succession after 10 minutes, with the initial shot going wide and the subsequent effort finding the side netting.
At the 17th minute Alexandra Cheal took down Siemsen which proved costly as Kennedy’s direct free kick had Bianca Henninger scrambling, getting a glove onto the ball which struck the the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Siemsen, 16, continued to strive forward with defenders chasing her, and only had Henniger to beat but the goalkeeper made amends for the free kick.
At the 35th minute a through ball from Leena Khamis landed to Georgia Yeoman-Dale whose cut back found Siemsen who doubled the lead.
After the hour mark Dowie should have pulled a goal back as Barbieri played her through past Shamiran Khamis however only found the side netting with an open goal.
At the 69th minute Kennedy almost replicated her first half goal hitting the crossbar again from a free kick.
Sydney paid for their complacency as Laura Sprianovic’s long throw landed to Dowie in the box, who turned and nutmegged Elizabeth Ralston to poke it home through Khamis’ legs.
Victory looked for answers at the end but could not capitalise and now look to next week’s Melbourne Derby which will be played in a double header before the A-League fixture between Melbourne City and Wellington Phoenix.
The Sky Blues return home to face Adelaide United at Seymour Shaw Stadium next week.
