YOU would expect Canberra United, Brisbane Roar, and Sydney FC to get up in round three of the Westfield W-League - but as any roundball fan knows, anything can happen in football.
Having been on the road for much of the previous two seasons, Canberra United instead get to spend a second week at home as they host Melbourne Victory.
Solid across the park courtesy of their strong off-season recruitment of the likes of Sally Shipard and season two golden boot Michelle Heyman, who opened her season three account with a hat trick, Canberra will be looking to maximise their home-ground advantage.
Not to be discounted, though, are Melbourne Victory, who will be playing just their second season three match (and hitting their stride) after sitting out round one with a bye.
The combination of a short trip to Canberra and the fact that the capital city’s climate is similar to Melbourne’s might just suit the Victory players. You can listen to live commentary of the Victory game HERE.
In other W-League matches, Brisbane Roar will make the short hop down the Eastern Seaboard to play Newcastle Jets.
Having had a week’s lay off, courtesy of a round two bye, Newcastle will be looking to hit the ground running and to get some points on the board. As will the Roar, who boast extensive depth and experience across the field, but whose combinations haven’t yet quite gelled.
They’ll be hoping that the third game’s the charm and that their season will be all upwards from here.
Speaking of up, ladder-leading Sydney FC wikl be heading down to Adelaide as they look to continue their flying form.
The winless Adelaide will need to bring their a-game in order to topple Sydney, but as Roar Women can attest from their last-minute season two stumble, the Lady Reds cannot and should not be underestimated.
