Champions Melbourne City continued their winning ways as 16 goals were scored in a thrilling opening round of the 2016/17 W-League season.
Melbourne City 1 Newcastle Jets 0
Melbourne City picked up where they left off last season with a 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets at CB Smith Reserve.
The first 10 minutes was misleading, City surged forward constantly and Jess Fishlock almost found the net after the fourth minute.
At the eighth minute City made it 1-0 after American import and former Melbourne Victory centre-back Lauren Barnes teed up former Wales captain Jess Fishlock to head home.
A terrible back pass from Laura Alleway put Lydia Williams under pressure which almost resulted in an own goal by the Matilda.
With 12 minutes remaining in the first half Arin Gilliland passed to Jennifer Hoy, whose cross almost deflected off Alleway however was tipped wide by Williams.
City began the second half positively, a goalmouth scramble in the box almost doubled their lead but was eventually claimed by Kelsley Wys.
Not often I can say debut but today I can. Proud of this team and grinding out the 3 points today #thisisourcity 💙⚽️ pic.twitter.com/FdBqFF8JVX

Just under the hour mark Emma Stanbury teed up Hoy whose final shot crashed into the side of the net and Williams was letting her defenders know about it.
City found rhythm with its passing but the Jets continued to look dangerous. Williams was there to rescue again after a Jenna Kingsley bullet header was smacked away.
With 12 minutes remaining in the game last-ditch defending landed to Stanbury with a first-time effort almost finding the net only to be denied by Williams.
The home side weathered the storm finishing 1-0 and player of the match Williams heads back to former club Canberra United next week while the Jets return to Melbourne next week to take on the Victory.

A club W-League stand-alone record crowd of 3,105 was in attendance as Roar came from behind to knock off the Sky Blues at Corporate Travel Management Stadium.
After a goalless first-half, Caitlin Foord opened the scoring for Sydney on 52 minutes, but Roar would respond.

Adelaide United 3 Melbourne Victory 3
The Lady Reds led three times on Sunday, but ultimately it ended square in a goalfest.
Adelaide's Stella Rigon opened the scoring on 13 minutes, before Player of the Match Natasha Dowie equalised moments later.
Adriana Jones made it 2-1 on 20 minutes, earning them a lead they held until the second half when Dowie levelled with a super strike.
Brazilian Monica restored Adelaide's buffer on 73 minutes, but substitute Selin Kuralay equalised again on 81 minutes.
A tantalising match, but we're unlucky not to be leaving with the three points. #AUFC #ForeverUnited pic.twitter.com/L1F7OifpLn

Perth Glory 4 Western Sydney Wanderers 2
Glory skipper Sam Kerr scored a second-half brace to seal the three points for the home side after Wanderers fought back from 2-0 down in front of a 2011-strong crowd.
Perth took the lead after just 18 seconds when Kerr intercepted the ball inside her team’s attacking half before feeding it off to Caitlin Doeglas, who completed the easiest of finishes for her first W-League goal.
Returning striker Rosie Sutton doubled Glory’s lead in the 22nd minute, hammering the ball home after a goalmouth scramble from a corner kick.
Wanderers midfielder Paige Nielsen provided a spark for her side just past the half-hour mark when she caught Glory goalkeeper Melissa Maizels off her line, but her chip shot cannoned into the woodwork.
Former Matildas winger Joanne Burgess pulled one back for the visitors in the 39th minute and almost drew her side level during added time, but was expertly denied by Maizels on the goal-line.
Burgess continued to be a thorn in Glory’s side after the break, firing in a low cross for Helen Petinos to put the match back on even terms.
Both teams squandered chances for a third goal until Kerr brilliantly sidestepped her rivals and curled the ball past Wanderers custodian Casey Dumont in the 68th minute.
Kerr assured the result for Perth seven minutes from full-time when she pounced on a goalkeeping mishap by Dumont, who failed to cleanly grasp the preceding shot from Nikki Stanton.
FULL TIME | What great support we had tonight for our season opener! Thanks to all our fans who watched the win! #PERvWSW #GloryIsOurs pic.twitter.com/xQOLG1DYwP
