A 10-man Western Sydney Wanderers have snapped a six-game winless run with a commanding 4-1 victory over a youthful Mariners outfit at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday.
Goals at both ends within a minute of each other got the clash off to a blinding start. Jumpei Kusukami (6') and Nicolas Martínez (31') gave the visitors the lead going into the break after Blake Powell (5') opened the scoring for the home side.
An own goal to Jake McGing (50') then put the Wanderers into a strong position before they were reduced to 10 men on the hour when goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson stormed out of the area and flattened the on-rushing Trent Buhagiar, earning himself a straight red.
Paul Okon's men failed to fashion any clearcut chances with their numerical advantage. Instead it was Western Sydney that looked the most likely to score - and they did - super sub Brendan Santalab hitting the back of the net (87') to ensure victory.
The result sees the visitors leapfrog the Mariners into 6th spot while Paul Okon's men drop to 7th.
Central Coast went into the match hoping to nail down their first back-to-back win since April 2014 but without the experience of Mickael Tavares and Nick Montgomery.
Wanderers coach Tony Popovic opted to leave striker Kerem Bulut out of the matchday squad while Brendon Santalab was benched, giving Lachlan Scott a start in attack.
And the 19-year-old was unlucky not to earn a penalty (21') after Harry Ascroft appeared to bring him down in the box with a challenge from behind.
Powell got the match off to a cracking start finshing off some tidy work from Storm Roux down the right, before the Wanderers surged up the other end and Kusukami, with his second in two games, cut in from the left and curled the ball in at the far post. Both goals benefiting from crucial deflections giving the goal keepers no chance.
Mitch Nichols then whipped a ball into the path of Martinez whose diving header put the Wanderers 2-1 up.
The Mariners had a glorious chance to restore parity when Connor Pain's precise cutback found O'Donovan who hit the upright before Adam Berry smashed the rebound into the scoreboard.
Disaster struck the Mariners early in the second-half when Scott Neville put the ball into the box and McGing under pressure could only turn the ball into his own net.
Santalab finished the rout, slamming home a deflected cross by Neville, to ensure the Wanderers headed home to Western Sydney with all three points.
MARINERS: 1 (Powell 5')
WANDERERS: 4 (Kusukami 6', Martinez 31', McGing o.g. 50', Santalab 87')
