Western Sydney Wanderers has appointed Spanish midfielder Dimas Delgado as the club’s new captain following Nikolai Topor-Stanley’s exit.
The 33-year-old former La Liga man becomes the club’s third skipper in its fledgling history, having worn the armband in the opening two rounds in Topor-Stanley’s absence.
Topor-Stanley, who was suspended in round one, officially left Wanderers for UAE outfit Hatta Club last week.
“I’m very happy with the decision and with the confidence of the club has placed in me,” Dimas said.
Dimas joined Wanderers in 2015 after spending more than a decade playing in the top few divisions in his native Spain.
The midfielder will be deputised by Mitch Nichols, who hailed the Spaniard’s leadership.
“Last year he came in and ran the midfield for us,” Nichols said.
“His on and off-the-field personality is such a calming influence within the team.
“We all look up to him. He’ll do a great job.”
Wanderers hosts Newcastle Jets on Sunday for the first time at Spotless Stadium.
