Scans have revealed that Jonathan Aspropotamitis ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the NYL Grand Final against Melbourne City.
The Western Sydney Wanderers defender has played a large role under first Hayden Foxe, and more recently Josep Gombau due to a growing-defensive crisis in Wanderland.
But the Olyroos centreback may be out for up to a year following the torn ACL, putting further stress on an already weakened WSW outfit.
Robert Corthwaite departed the Wanderers for Malaysia earlier this season, leaving Brendan Hammill and Michael Thwaite as the only central defenders in Gombau's squad.
Wanderers are looking to sign an emergency replacement defender to fill the hole left by Aspro's injury. The Wanderers beat City 3-1 in the NYL Grand Final, ending City's dominant streak in the competition.
