After a scrappy opening, the Cavaliers opened the scoring five minutes into the second half after defender Daniel Jones scrambled home a header.

But the home side pulled the goal back courtesy of striker Zoran Petrevski five minutes later and Gully could not find a late winner despite dominating the last 15 minutes.

It was a scrappy although high in intensity opening with both teams cautious in their approach.

The visitors had the aid of a breeze, although both teams struggled to maintain possession in the conditions.

The first real chance fell for Hume 12 minutes in.

Lively forward pair Richard Cardozo and Andy Vlahos exchanged passes, before Cardozo swung in a cross from the left for his player-coach to force a scrambling save from Nikola Roganovic.

The home side was looking more dangerous than its counterparts, with Gully still struggling in the forward third.

City midfielder Alfonso Opazo played Vlahos down the right and Gully central defender Mile Medjedovic was forced into a last ditch clearance.

The visitors were getting into the game and should have been ahead after half an hour.

A corner from Andy Vargas fell to the feet of defender Jones, but he blazed over from inside six yards.

Down the left, the ever-influential Steven Burton overlapped before crossing for Mathew Sanders, but his shot was blocked inside the area.

A minute into the second half and former Melbourne Victory man Aziz Behich should have opened the scoring.

Cardozo crossed from the left and Behich, loose on the back post, struck his volley off the instep and well wide.

Gully was ahead in the 50th minute after the impressive Graham Hockless won a corner after his shot was deflected wide.

The same man took the corner that was deflected high into the air.

With Lupce Acevski approaching and a number of men in the area, the ball was deflected into the net by Jones after a scramble inside the area.

Cardozo swung a couple of long crosses high and wide before assisting Petrevski for the equalizer.

His ball from the right fell for Petrevski to get past Roganovic and apply the simplest of finishes for his fourth goal of the season.

Burton put in a cross for Gary Wales in the 56th minute, but the striker could only head over.

With 20 minutes to play, Burton, who had developed a freedom to move forward, hit a low fizzing shot just wide of Acevski's goal.

The Cavaliers continued to pile on the pressure and new recruit Jason Hayne had a good chance in the 76th minute.

Captain Jeffrey Fleming put in a deep cross from the right and Wales's overhead kick fell for Hayne but he mishit wide from the centre of the area.

Jones again wasted a golden chance, striking well over, and Wales could only put his header over the bar moments later.

The quick striker got one on target in the dying minutes, but after a fine turn his shot was directly at Acevski in the City goal.

City held on for a fortunate point to remain in the top three while Gully wasted a good chance to move into the top five.
