To see the Prime Minister meet Harry and the Roos and Matildas today...

The 29-year-old fronted the media at North Sydney Oval today ahead of Friday’s friendly with Ghana.

Despite his recent departure from Anfield, it was a buoyant Kewell that spoke about a number of issues including his next move and the chances of him playing on until he’s 40.

Kewell says he is over his injury problems and he is just hungry for as much game time as possible under Pim Verbeek.

“The body’s good. Am I ready to play 90 minutes? Yes. I think I can run with the best of them now," he said.

"I’m looking forward to it. Obviously my match fitness is down because I haven’t played for God knows how long now. But in general fitness I’m very good.”

Injuries ultimately thwarted Kewell’s hopes of extending his time with boyhood heroes Liverpool but he feels all the times on the sidelines could actually end up prolonging his career.

He said: “There were obviously times over my career where I sat down and I thought ‘what’s going on?’ But every athlete goes through these problems. You’ve just got to be mentally strong to get through them.

“A lot of people go (to me) you want to prove a lot of people wrong but I’ve just got to go out there and enjoy myself.

“I think the one person I would like to just show is probably my old manager (Rafa Benitez). I didn’t get a chance to show him a lot of what I could do and it would be great just to show him what I was capable of doing.

“I’ve always had the best team behind me giving me the best advice in how to go forward. A couple of years ago I came back here and had a lot of work done by some top surgeons. That’s still going strong.”

A recent report about the player suggested a desire to carry on playing until 40. Kewell said: “I have gone through a rough time but because my body has taken a rest over the last couple of years, there is no reason why, if you keep your body in good shape, why you can’t go on until hopefully 40 but you never know?”

Not that Kewell is simply taking his place in Verbeek’s team for granted. He knows how quickly the hunter becomes the hunted.

He said: “There’s always younger, fitter, stronger people coming through.

"Players like me and the older players in the team have to stay on our toes because the youngsters are creeping up and wanting to take our positions.

"He’s a great manager, he listens to the players, he knows what he wants out of the team and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

A report today suggested Kewell was bound for Portsmouth but Kewell just laughs off speculation regarding his future.

“There’s always speculation about my club involvement," he said. "Obviously it’s a new chapter in my life but as you’re all well aware I can’t give that information quite yet.

“Portsmouth? Apparently my agent did it while he was on the plane coming over so I don’t know how he’s done that.

“I have never shied away from going abroad, from playing anywhere. My options are open and we’ll see what happens.”
