The Indian club had won through to the final of Asian's secondary club cup competition for the first time. Iraqi side Al-Quqa Al-Jawiya had never reached the decider either, and a goal from Hammadi Ahmad was enough for them to secure the trophy.

Watson joined Bengaluru FC from the Newcastle Jets this season and has made a fast start to life in the I-League.

"It was a great occasion and proud to be a part of it," the midfielder told FourFourTwo.

"It was a tough game, which we expected. They were very physical and set up quite well. I think in the end they deserved the result, but in saying that we had our chances as well."

The final was played in Qatar and Ahmad struck in the 70th minute. Watson said there wasn't much between the two teams.

"It felt that way as well duing the game, it was pretty tight for the majority," he said.

"They had a good chance first half so did we second half. Towards the end we had to go and attack but it wasn't to be."

Watson remains positive this is the first step in a bright future for Indian club football. Bengaluru FC has been home to Australian players before, with the likes of former Olyroo Sean Rooney previously turning out for the club.

"It was a great achievement for everyone involved and Indian football," Watson said.

"It can only get better from here. The club has set the standard for professionalism over the past four years and I think getting to the final was the reward. Now we know what it will take to win it next year."
