The Baggies received a hiding at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, but have recovered well since, beating both Sunderland and Leyton Orient without conceding a goal.

"I don't think I could have asked for any more," said Di Matteo.

"We had a very solid performance at home to Sunderland and a really good win in the Carling Cup.

"You are disappointed when you lose and happier when you win. Winning games means your confidence grows. The mood this week has been quite good.

"We were looking to improve our performance from the first game to the second game, which we managed to do. Now we'd like to cut out any mistakes and give ourselves the best chance to get anything out of this game."

Captain Scott Carson, who was in goal at Stamford Bridge, said the win over Sunderland was crucial considering the nature of West Brom's fixture list, which sees them take on Liverpool, Tottenham, Birmingham and Arsenal within the next month.

He said: "We knew that the Sunderland game was going to be massive and if we were to have any chance this season we would have to put in a good performance and get some points.

"Obviously three points was a massive result for us and hopefully we can kick on from that.

"If any team gets beaten 6-0 then they're going to be a bit low and that's exactly what it was like after the Chelsea game.

"We showed good mental strength to pick ourselves up."

West Brom were beaten 3-0 on their last trip to Anfield two seasons ago, but Carson believes Liverpool's poor start to the season, allied with their boardroom uncertainty, means his team are in a great position to cause an upset.

He said: "They haven't had it easy over the last couple of weeks and obviously there's been a lot going on at the club.

"Hopefully we can take full advantage of that, but we know what great players Liverpool have and what a good side they are so it won't be easy.

"We just hope that we can catch them on an off day and hope that things that have gone on lately have affected them."

The Baggies will be without defender Marek Cech, who fractured his metatarsal in the win over Leyton Orient.

The Slovakia international is likely to be out for at least three weeks.
