Jones and Federici were given  45 minutes each in the 2-1 friendly win over New Zealand on Monday night.

And although Jones had little to do in the second 45 minutes as the Socceroos slowly worked their way back into the contest, the Boro keeper came up with a super stop to deny a certain goal from the dangerous Rory  Fallon.

Young Kiwi Tommy Smith's pin-point cross found Fallon in space right in front of goal but his effort was superbly saved by Jones.

It gave the Boro keeper the confidence that should there be an injury to Schwarzer, Australia will be in safe hands.

"That's why Fedders and I are both here. Tonight was a run-out for us with Mark [Schwarzer] having a little niggle with his thumb," Jones told au.fourfourtwo.com.

"That gave us both an opportunity to give us half [a game] each which was good for both of us. We both need game time but we both need time out there with the boys we could possibly end up playing with."

And for Jones his display against New Zealand would to some degree banish the memory of playing for the Socceroos against Uruguay in 2007.

It was his mistake that lead to a tap in for Alvaro Recoba in the 2-1 friendly win for Uruguay at ANZ stadium.

"I was good for both of us and in the end it was a good run-out for a lot of players who haven't had too much game time," added Jones.

In fact, Jones or Federici could be the two keepers battling it out for the number one spot in the Socceroo squad at next January's Asian Cup.

But  Jones, 28, was playing down such talk. "That's a long way away. I'm just happy to be in the squad for the World Cup. I'm not even thinking of anything further on."
