"It has been an off day for us," said Borriello, who had cancelled out Alexander Frei's opener with a 21st-minute strike.

But Samuel Inkoom soon fired Basle back in front before substitute Cabral struck deep into stoppage time to cap a wonderful evening for the visitors.

"It's a pity because this game meant a lot, especially when playing in front of our fans," said Borriello.

"It's a tough loss for us. We hope that it doesn't cost us dearly with regards to progressing in the competition.

"But we are men and we must prove to have the force to react."

The result, Roma's second loss in Group E, left the Italians at the bottom of the pool, level on three points with Cluj and Basel after three games played.

Group leaders Bayern Munich top the group on nine points after they maintained their perfect record with a 3-2 home win over Cluj.

"We've taken a step back with respect to our game against Genoa," said Roma coach Claudio Ranieri, whose side beat Genoa 2-1 on Saturday to climb out of the relegation zone in Serie A.

"We could have done without conceding a goal before the break.

"Things are not going well for us and that just means that we have to work harder in training."

Basle, meanwhile, were delighted to have claimed their first win of the European campaign after defeats to Cluj and Bayern Munich before Tuesday's game in the Italian capital.

"We were unlucky in our previous games," midfielder Benjamin Huggel said.

"Tonight we played really well and with great determination. We held Roma in the second half when they tried to find the equaliser.

"We did very well to resist and take home three points."

Roma visit Basle on November 3 while Cluj host Bayern Munich.
