The injury-time 1-0 defeat at Wigan was Spurs' fifth Barclays Premier League match without victory - a run which includes three defeats - and leaves them third-bottom of the table.

After enjoying some initial success when he first arrived Redknapp has seen results slump again.

Redknapp has previously criticised predecessor Juande Ramos for the state of the squad he left behind when he was sacked last year and now he has pointed the finger at the players.

"If you look at the results of Tottenham over the last year you have to be concerned," he said.

"Look back to the end of last season after the Carling Cup and see how many points they have got.

"They had two points from eight games when I came here. How do you get two points from eight games?

"They (the players) put the club in it, it is up to them to get us out of it.

"It looks like a certain kind of player right through [the squad]. There is plenty of flair.

"But we are in a relegation scrap and we need some men and some characters to get us out of it, that is what you are looking for when you are in the position we are in.

"We've got some but not enough. You'd put your life on Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson, Didier Zokora, Jamie O'Hara."

Redknapp was also critical of his defence for allowing Maynor Figueroa to head the winner from a corner in injury time.

"It was a poor header by the left-back to concede the corner and then we didn't defend the corner," he added.

"It looked a banker draw. I don't remember our keeper having to pull off many world class saves today."

New signing Jermain Defoe had a frustrating 90 minutes on his return to the club he left for Portsmouth less than 12 months ago.

The striker, watched by England coach Fabio Capello, was making his first appearance since completing his transfer back from Fratton Park.

He failed to have a shot on target but Redknapp said the player lacked support.

"We didn't see a great deal of him. He needs someone up there with him who is going to get hold of the ball," said Redknapp, who replaced the ineffectual Roman Pavlyuchenko after eight minutes of the second half.

Wigan left-back Maynor Figueroa's late header made it five successive Barclays Premier League victories at the JJB Stadium.

The hosts had created the majority of opportunities but had not had anything really clear cut, although on the balance of chances they deserved their victory.

Manager Steve Bruce was delighted with the win, which keeps his side in seventh place.

"There is no better time to score than the last minute but if any team was going to get it I felt we were the ones," said Bruce.

"We found it very difficult to break them down with Woodgate, Dawson and Ledley King in there.

"Halfway through I was thinking it had 0-0 written all over it.

"I've just watched Figueroa to see how he has got in there and to be fair to him he's done his job exactly how we wanted him to do it.

"He has stood in front of the goalkeeper to come off, and he has got the header.

"Jermaine Jenas doesn't pick him up properly and he sticks it in the net."
