EXCLUSIVE: AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam pledged in Sydney today to set up an Asian Coaches Association to enhance local talent.
In a speech opening the FFA’s inaugural Coaching Conference in Sydney this morning, Bin Hammam said it was a priority for the AFC to improve coaching in the region.
“We need to invest in the younger generation of coaches,” he said. “That’s why we will set up an Asian Coaches Association with representatives elected by the member associations’ coaching committees.”
He added that at club level, the culture of chopping and changing coaches was counter-productive.
“Stability is important in coaching. The revolving door of coaches must stop. It’s short sighted and we lose credibility as a result. We must look to long term-planning.”
He added: “The AFC doesn’t have to be perfect, just better.”
FFA CEO Ben Buckley, who introduced Bin Hammam, reiterated his desire to see 12 teams in the A-League “in the next two years”. He was also hopeful that the conference would become an annual event.
