The Socceroos started well in Bangkok, taking a ninth minute lead through Mile Jedinak’s penalty.

Thailand then hit back with practically their first attack when Teerasil Dangda completed a nice move to level after 20 minutes.

From there, the War Elephants were the better side and were unlucky not to claim all three points.

“Firstly I think we’ve got to give credit to (Thailand),” Postecoglou told Fox Sports. “We battled hard and we started well enough.

“Sometimes we’re out own worst enemy. We gave the ball away cheaply and allowed them to come into the game.

“Second half they had us on the back foot and we couldn’t really recover.

“Playing away from home is always tough. You can’t fault the players’ efforts.

“We got a bit careless in our ball possession. We couldn’t really control the game like we wanted to.

“As soon as it became a game of end to end, they got into it, it’s kind of their game.

“From my perspective it’s not the way we want to play the game.”

The Socceroos had no answers against Thailand

The Socceroos drop to third in the group following the draw, with Japan’s 2-1 win over group leaders Saudi Arabia helping them move into second spot.

Saudi Arabia and Japan sit in the top two spots with 10 points, with Australia third with nine points.

Australia has three of their final five games remaining at home, but next face Iraq away, before hosting UAE in Sydney in March.

“I still think we’re well placed,” Postecoglou said.

“We’ve had three tough away trips and we haven’t lost. We’re pretty strong at home.

“From a qualification point of view I certainly don’t think there’s extra pressure, but that’s external buzz.

“For us, looking at this series of games we’ve come out of it a couple of points short of where we wanted to be.

“Tonight give credit to them. They took the game to us and got the point they deserved.”
