Wellington Phoenix has announced four more recruitments as the side prepares for the upcoming A-League season.
Along with Ross Aloisi, Wellington Phoenix powerbrokers have etched out deals with four more players with A-League experience.
Significantly, two of those four are New Zealand nationals which suggests that the side is keen to embrace more local players asau.fourfourtwo.com sources have also tipped a number of other New Zealand players who have played for Australian sides to return New Zealand and play for Phoenix. The now-defunct New Zealand Knights were criticised for fielding a largely non-New Zealand side.
The four players are Tim Brown (ex-Newcastle Jets), New Zealand goalkeeper Mark Paston, Richard Johnson (ex New Zealand Knights) and Michael Ferrante (ex-Melbourne Victory). Each has signed a two-year deal with the exception of Johnson - who has a one-year contract.
“It speaks volumes that Tim wants to be a Phoenix player,” said Herbert.
“From a performance point of view he’s played at that high level which will be important.
“Mark (Paston) is the national team goalkeeper. His presence and performances at the back end of last year’s A-League for the Knights were quite outstanding.”
The player with the highest profile however, is Michael Ferrante as he has experience in both England and Italy. Ferrante was originally one of Ernie Merrick's brightest prospects but made just five appearances in the Victory's groundbreaking run in the 2006/07 A-League season.
“Having been in a very successful club (Melbourne Victory), he will be looking to set a benchmark for himself with regular appearances for Phoenix. Michael’s very keen to make an impression.”
With more spots to fill, Herbert is confident his side is fast gathering strength.
“It’s nice to be able to bring an initial group to its conclusion at Phoenix. More signings will be released in the coming days,” he finished.
