The Gunners fielded a young side with an average age of just 19 years and six months for their final pre-season game against Sevilla in the Amsterdam Tournament which ended 1-1.

That result may have all but secured a successful defence of the title for the Barclays Premier League club, with hosts Ajax taking on Inter Milan tonight, but Wenger's attentions are now clearly on the return to Holland and a showdown with former England manager Steve McClaren in Arnhem.

Arsenal, though, will go into the crunch encounter "one body light" in midfield, but Wenger refused to be drawn on just who may be on his wish list - with Udinese's Switzerland international Gokhan Inler a reported £8million target while the Gunners have also been linked with Aston Villa's Gareth Barry and Liverpool's Xabi Alonso.

"At the moment, I am not close to concluding any transfer deal, because I am too busy here," said Wenger.

"Maybe next week something can happen, but for now we have to focus on the Champions League and forget about transfers because it is a big target for us."

The Arsenal manager insisted: "I do not rule anybody completely out at the moment, so everything is possible."

Wenger maintains his squad have what it takes to progress through a two-legged tie against the Dutch outfit.

"I am confident and have belief the team will be focused and treat Twente with respect," he said.

"We have learned through our experience and I am confident we can qualify.

"You always expect good opposition in Holland, but I believe we are good enough to get through."

Full-back Justin Hoyte, a reported target for Middlesbrough, was one of the young Gunners on display.

Wenger, though, maintained there had been no firm offers for the defender.

He said: "At the moment, he is with us and we have no formal offer from anybody.

"There is interest here and there, but nothing concrete."

Wenger added: "I may let one or two go on loan because they need to play, it is part of education.

"It is not especially to get Premiership experience, but to play in the first team every week with that pressure.

"Then when we feel they are ready to integrate in the first team, they come back."

Mexican striker Carlos Vela - back from a season loan at Osasuna after gaining a work permit - netted a superb finish after only four minutes, with substitute Javier Espinosa netting a late equaliser as the young Gunners tired.

Wenger felt it was worthwhile experience.

He said: "Today we were very young, but I in the end we learned what it is like to defend, what we are not used to and in the end it was a good lesson for us.

"Overall I am pleased because we lacked a bit of experience but we got a positive result with 1-1, even if overall Sevilla had many more chances."

On 19-year-old Vela, who has impressed in pre-season, Wenger said: "He is an exciting player and feel he is still not there physically.

"But overall he has all the skill and technical qualities to be an Arsenal player."
