Despite going down to ten-men Melbourne City hung onto a 2-nil lead in Sydney thanks to heroics from goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.
This was while Western Sydney Wanderers woes continue, with the clubs active supporters - the RBB - walking out at half-time in protest.
The match began a snoozefest. A cagey affair with both sides refusing to unleash their attacking speed and prowess as the Wanderers looked relatively stable in defence.
A long throw-in however unlocked their tight-knit line as Lachy Wales powered through a lackadaisical Wanderers back line and slotted home for 1-0. Only two minutes later Raul Llorente's poor defensive work allowed Riley McGree to set up Ritchie De Laet for a second.
Rostyn Griffiths was given his marching orders in the 55th minute while Eugene Galekovic kept the result intact for City. Two stunning saves in quick succession including a brilliant penalty save ensured Melbourne City lengthened their unbeaten run to three matches.
WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS
Vedran Janjetovic - 6
Janjetovic was late to charge out of his box for Wales' goal while De Laet's strike was hard to stop.
Tarek Elrich - 5
The birthday boy was caught out of position early in the second half, luckily the offside flag bailed out the right back. Elrich fell asleep as a long throw opened up the Wanderers defence as Wales stole the lead.
Patrick Ziegler - 5
Ziegler struggled to make his passes stick and struggled in communication with the midfield players, especially his German counterpart Alex Baumjohann.
Brendan Hamill - 4
Hamill defended well himself but struggled to organise his troops at the back with some horrific positioning leading to City's goals and countless chances.
Raul Llorente - 3
The whole Wanderers defence fell asleep as Wales pounced in behind and a throw in unlocked the doors for 1-0 at ANZ, Llorente could do nothing but chase.
His defensive frailty was shown only two minutes later after he was skinned by McGree who set up De Laet for number two.
Roly Bonevacia - 3
Bonevacia seriously struggled to find time and space on the ball and was a weaklink for the Wanderers going forward.
Jordan O'Doherty - 5
O'Doherty helped on the play with quick passing and decent vision on the pitch. The Wanderers lack of defensive cover in midfield was on display as they struggled to deal with the numbers City had in the middle of the pitch.
Keanu Baccus - 5
Who won the battle of the Baccus brothers? They were both average but Keanu hardly shined in the match throughout.
Alexander Baumjohann - 4
The German maestro was hardly that, snatching at passes in break away plays, stymieing the Wanderers' attacks.
Bruce Kamau - 3
Kamau's first half was so-so, with an unsuccessful cross and failed shot before a foolish yellow card after dragging back a City player on halfway. Kamau then missed a one-on-one opportunity although superb goalkeeping from Galekovic played a major part in the miss.
Oriol Riera - 6
Riera worked well in between the lines dropping in and linking up the play for two Wanderers chances early in the first half. Riera's penalty was saved by Galekovic in the final ten minutes of the match.

Abraham Majok - 6
Majok came on for Bruce Kamau who had a troubled match. Majok's perstistence earned Western Sydney a penalty in the 85th minute.
Nick Fitzgerald - 6
Fitzgerald replaced Jordan O'Doherty on the 77th minute as the late replacements for the Wanderers provided no sparks.
Tass Mourdoukoutas - N/A
Not on the field long enough to receive a rating
MELBOURNE CITY
Eugene Galekovic - 9
Galekovic was wayward with his clearances putting City back under pressure without the adequate numbers to press the ball again. Galekovic pulled off a superb finger tip save to deny Kamau in a one-on-one situation.
Galekovic then rolled back the years to deny the Wanderers with two stunning saves in the second half.
Ritchie De Laet - 7
De Laet scored his third A-League goal of the season with a powerful drive into the side netting making it two goals in two minutes for Melbourne City.
Harrison Delbridge - 7
Delbridge had a solid performance with tidy passing and tackling. Delbridge's long passing was inaccurate, however.
Bart Schenkeveld - 6.5
Schenkeveld has a battle on his hands up against Oriol Riera as Riera seemed to have brushed up on the Dutchman's movements.
Schenkeveld thought twice about his cheeky one touch passing but still managed to keep situations under control.
Scott Jamieson - 6.5
The skipper wasn't at his best, turning over possession on his left flank as well as struggling to find chances going forward on the Wanderers defensive right side.
Rostyn Griffiths - 3
On more than one occasion Griffiths turned over the ball in an extremely dangerous position, on many occasions he was bailed out by a team-mate. His horror night was finalised with a second yellow card on 55 minutes and was sent off leaving City in a lurch.
Kearyn Baccus - 6.5
The older Baccus brother was more often fixing up Griffiths' mistakes in midfield than dictating play. He did a good job of breaking up the Wanderers midfield.
Luke Brattan - 7
Brattan's role has become more and more advanced as weeks go by. Tonight he was stationed at almost a false-nine in an attempt to use his creativity as high up the field as possible.
Riley McGree - 8
McGree was struggling to get onto the ball in dangerous positions but when he did he made his presence felt. McGree raced past Llorente and assisted City's second goal.
Lachlan Wales - 7
The youngster, almost from nothing, ran beyond the Wanderers defence from a long throw from Scott Jamieson and calmly finished for his second goal of the season.
Dario Vidosic - 6.5
Vidosic didn't play an integral part tonight, playing alongside Wales it's clear to see the two players, who aren't used to playing in a paired striking partnership, are struggling.
SUBS
Osama Malik - 6
Osama Malik came on for Brattan surprisingly after Melbourne City went down to ten men. The midfielder rode out the storm of the Wanderers onslaughts.
Nathaniel Atkinson - 6
Atkinson was a full-back replacement for marquee De Laet.
Remy Najjarine - 6
The youngster was brought in to keep the legs going up front as Melbourne City looked toward the counter-attack.
