Perth Glory could not extend their lead at the top as an equaliser in the final seconds of the match from Tarek Elrich helped Western Sydney Wanderers achieve an undeserved 1-1 draw in their final game at Spotless Stadium.
In a dull first half, the first goal came from the familiar combination of Diego Castro and Chris Ikonomidis as the captain put in a low cross for the new Socceroos forward to deftly flick past Vedran Janjetovic.
There didn't look to be an answer from the Wanderers as they gave up the ball time and time again, only for Elrich to take a hopeful shot from distance that somehow found its way into the back of the net.
It was to be the last meaningful kick of the game and Western Sydney will be happy to take a point from the champions, even if the performance didn’t deserve it, while Perth will be looking to ensure they do not slip up and give their chasers a sniff at the Premiership.
Western Sydney Wanderers
Vedran Janjetović – 6.5
It’s hard to say if Janjetović could have saved the goal because it was from such close-range, but he made a big save to keep his team in the game when Andy Keogh only had the goalkeeper to beat to double the lead.
Abraham Majok – 6
In an unfamiliar position as the left-back, it’s hard to be too critical for Majok. His natural instinct is to go forward, which left his team open on the counter-attack.
Tass Mourdoukoutas – 6
The 19-year-old had an average display, though he might want to work on his sprint speed as he lost a foot-race against the aging Andy Keogh.
Tarek Elrich – 7
Given the captaincy in lieu of the absent Hamill, he was partially at fault for conceding, but more than made up for it with a hopeful shot in the dying moments to find the equaliser.
Tate Russell – 6.5
With Majok playing so far up on the left side, Russell was instructed into a far more conservative right-back position. He held his own and didn’t give his direct opponent, Jason Davidson, any chance to get past him.
Jordan O’Doherty – 6
O’Doherty was unfortunately taken off early in the game with reports suggesting he tore his anterior cruciate ligament. We hope that’s not the case and that regardless, that he makes a speedy and healthy recovery.
Keanu Baccus – 6
Retained possession well with some neat passing but never threatened a ball in the final third.
Roly Bonevacia – 5.5
Couldn’t repeat the heroics of last week and couldn’t deliver a final ball that penetrated the drilled Glory defence.
Alexander Baumjohann - 5
On his return back into the starting eleven for the Wanderers, the German was unable to influence the game as he was mostly anonymous before being taken off after the hour mark.
Bruce Kamau – 5.5
Seemed to be on a different wavelength to his team tonight. Passing for runs that his teammates weren’t making and making runs that weren’t being met by his team.
Oriol Riera – 5.5
The Spaniard looks nothing like the player that scored 15 goals last season. Devoid of confidence and did not do anything of note tonight before being hauled off in the second half.
SUBS
Rashid Mahazi – 5.5
Mahazi was brought on unexpectedly early as he had to replace O’Doherty but couldn’t shield his defence against the likes of Castro and Ikonomidis.
Mitchell Duke - 7
Came on in the 60th minute and was the only source of inspiration in a dull team. He deserves to be in the starting line-up for the next fixture.
Mark Bridge – 6
Was given a romantic substitution by Babbel after he announced his retirement early in the week but came on too late to get the equaliser.
Perth Glory
Liam Reddy – 6.5
Was hardly tested until the last moments where he spurned what should have been a regulation save.
Shane Lowry – 7
Lowry was dependable in bringing the ball out from the back and provided a solid platform for his team.
Matthew Spiranovic - 6
Spiranovic was unusually shoddy with his distribution from the back, giving away possession more than once and offering Bruce Kamau a chance at goal when he was dispossessed near the box.
Dino Djulbic – 6.5
Djulbic was decent with his passing and didn’t give the Wanderers any meaningful chances but was still taken off for Scott Neville late in the game.
Jason Davidson – 6
Davidson was not able to maintain his form of late, as he was kept quiet by Russell for most of the match.
Neil Kilkenny – 6.5
The dead-ball specialist had plenty of corners to show his talent but wasn’t able to put in any dangerous crosses from those situations.
Juande – 7.5
Juande is making a case to be the best defensive midfielder in the league. He is brilliant at protecting his back-line as well as connecting play between the defence towards his more capable attacking colleagues.
Ivan Franjic – 6
Franjic was caught ball-watching for the late equaliser when he should’ve been rushing to close down Elrich from taking a shot.
Chris Ikonomidis - 9
He put the finishing touch in the only goal of the game, his eighth of the season and was threatening the defence with his runs the whole game. The former Wanderers player kept his class and didn’t celebrate after scoring.
Diego Castro - 9
The Glory captain gets better with age, another scintillating display where he dictated play and created the opener for Ikonomidis with an easy cross.
Andy Keogh – 6
Missed a one on one chance where he should have scored just before he was subbed off. Otherwise, he wasn’t much of a threat and was well managed by the Western Sydney Wanderers' defence.
SUBS
Joel Chianese – 6.5
Came on for Keogh and was quite threatening but couldn’t get the final ball right on the chances he created on his short time on the pitch.
Scott Neville – 6
A strange substitution by Tony Popovic to replace his central defender for a right-back, and he might be wishing he had the experience of Djulbic to stop the equaliser.
Jake Brimmer – 6
Came on very late for Ikonomidis but there wasn’t much he could do in such a short time
