The Wanderers are flying high after three wins from the first three rounds of the season.

And along for the ride is local junior Wilmering. The defender made his debut off the bench against Central Coast Mariners in round one, replacing the injured Tarek Elrich.

With Elrich recovering, Wilmering started in victories over both Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC.

The 18-year-old is pinching himself as Western Sydney prepare to take on Brisbane Roar.

“Two months ago if someone would have told me that I would have played the first three games of the season I probably wouldn’t have believed them,” he admitted to FTBL.

“But I’m very happy at the moment. Obviously this opportunity has been a very good experience and one that I’m learning from every game.”

Wilmering played 90 minutes in the Sydney derby, and as someone who grew up in Wattle Grove as a Wanderers fan, he loved every minute of it.

“It was a great win, a great experience for me,” he said.

“Especially because we haven’t won the derby for two or three years. To win it now, the first one in a new season and the first one at the new stadium, it was a pretty sweet feeling.”

Wilmering’s bond with Western Sydney is a strong one as he was ball boy for the club in its first season and came through its academy, after a spell with Marconi.

“It is a very special feeling every time I put on the jersey and it’s one I don’t take for granted,” he said.

“I know what this club means to the fans. It’s been a tough couple of years for them and they deserve the start we’ve had to the season as much as anyone.”

The Wanderers might have had a perfect start to the season but Wilmering says they have not hit their straps yet.

“We’ve still got a long way to go, we’re not at 100% yet,” he said.

“It probably wasn’t out best performance in the derby, but we’ve got very good resilience. All three games have been tight, down to the wire games and we’ve come out on top in all of them.

“That’s our goal [to win silverware]. We don’t want to settle for second, we want to go all the way and come first. Having a good start to the season like this one was key and it’s put us on the right path. We still have a long way to go.”
