The Socceroos' convincing win moved them second in Group B of AFC World Cup qualifying, handing them favouritism in the race for an automatic place at Brazil ahead of Oman [second] and Jordan [third].

The roof was left open on Tuesday before and during the match, with rain falling in Melbourne earlier in the day.

The pitch was also watered prior to kick-off, ensuring a surface subject to a match of Australian rules football just two days before was also slippery.

"Yes (I was unhappy with the pitch), especially before the match, they sprayed the ground with water," Hamad said via translator after the match.

"This didn't help us, especially for the players, and we didn’t have enough control on the ball."

But Hamad was quick to pay tribute to Australia, stating the hosts had deserved the win in one of their "best matches" in their qualification campaign.

He also said Jordan would hold out hope for a first World Cup place: "We still have a chance in this group, in next week's match [against Oman in Amman], and hopefully we can achieve that," he said.

Hamad also revealed the reasoning being the 89th-minute substitute of veteran goalkeeper Amer Shafia.

Shafia had been left incensed after he was not awarded a foul in the lead up to Lucas Neill's 84th-minute goal, having already clashed with Sasa Ognenovski.

He again showed his fiery side when he gestured at fans after his substitution.

"The reason [he was taken off] was because the goalkeeper had a yellow card in the previous match, and [I] didn’t want [Shafia] to earn another yellow and miss the important match against Oman," Hamad said.

"That was the reason behind it."
