Baumjohann has been at the core of Sydney’s attack with brilliant through balls opening up defences, but he says that he wants to be the one getting on the end of some chances as well.

“My own expectation is to be the best player in the league and I think for this I have to score some goals,” he said following the win over Central Coast Mariners.

"At the moment I’m more creating chances but hopefully in the next few games I’ll start to score."

He has been forced to adapt to a new position this season than what he’s used to, with had coach Steve Corica demanding more defensive action from the former Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder.

“Defensively it’s a lot of work because I have to cover the left fullback or the 6s and when you play alone in the middle it’s just the other 6," he said.

"But it’s not a problem for me, I feel good in this position.”

Baumjohann has shared his playmaking duties with Milos Ninkovic which has seen the duo assisting goals for fun.

On the pitch as well as off it, the two creative midfielders harbour a strong friendship that has further improved their play.

As Baumjohann admits, even at his own experienced age and a stint at Bayern Munich, the Serbian has still helped him develop his own game

He added: “You can always learn, I think especially in this system, he does a good job defensively.

"Every training I can learn from him and it’s really funny to play with him.”
