Aurelio Vidmar has already been appointed as one of those assistants and the former Adelaide United boss will also take on the role of Olyroo coach for the 2012 campaign.

But it was revealed today at the announcement of Osieck that a second assistant coach from Australia will be added to the Socceroos.

With the decision due in the next month, there will be fierce debate as to who should be given the job. Names such as AIS coach Gary Van Egmond and Ernie Merrick might be thrown into  the mix.

But one coach who who Osieck remembers well is Branko Culina. As coach of Urawa Red Diamonds, the J-League side faced Culina’s Sydney FC in the 2007 Asian  Champions League group stage.

The eventual ACL winners could not beat the sky blues over the two games drawing 2-2 in the Harbour City and 0-0 in Saitama.

This was all the more meritorious for Culina given he’d only taken over at the end of the previous A-League campaign. And Culina’s in-depth knowledge of Osieck’s side caught the eye of many of the travelling journalists - unlike Osieck who conceded he knew little of the sky blues.

Osieck described the games against the A-League side as being very difficult. “Looking  back they gave us a pretty tough time,” he said at today’s unveiling via video link from Slovenia.

“We’d just started our J-League games and we had to go down to Sydney. I didn’t know too much about the team but I was really impressed. They gave us a hard time.

“They went up 2-0 early and I thought oh, sh….”

Osieck – pronounced “Ozik” – added that Steve Corica, Alex Brosque and David Carney caught his eye – the latter two potential Socceroos over the next four years.

“It could’ve been the end of the campaign for us but I don’t know the goalkeeper’s name [Clint Bolton] but he was a very nice host and he helped us get back in the game.

“But we managed to get the draw and go through and from then on the team could develop, but looking back I still recall Corica, Carney and Brosque upfront with his speed some excellent individuals."

FFA Chairman Frank Lowy said at today’s shock announcement of Osieck as new Socceroo coach that it was not about buying the World Cup vote bid of fellow German Franz Beckenbauer.

But Lowy said that he did consult “De Kaiser” about Osieck as a potential coach for the national team.

There were six to eight coaches interviewed, revealed Lowy. Osieck was first approached by the FFA at the recent World Cup in South Africa.

The FFA boss added: “We hope in the medium term as a result of Holger’s appointment we’ll be able to have an Australian head coach in the near future as a result of this appointment.”

It’s believed the Socceroo players were informed of the Osieck decision yesterday.
