FA Cup winners Wigan have been relegated from the Premier League after a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday.
Roberto Martinez's side were brought swiftly back down to earth by goals from Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey after the elation of beating Manchester City in Saturday's Wembley showpiece.
The Lancashire club needed to get at least a point to give them the faintest chance of survival, but defeat leaves them four points adrift of 17th-placed Sunderland with just one game left in the Premier League season.
After winning the FA Cup, Wigan's fixture list will be a packed one next season as they combine a 46-game Championship campaign with a run in the UEFA Europa League.
Wigan have earned a reputation for being escape artists in recent years after ensuring survival with late-season surges in each of the last three campaigns under the guidance of Martinez.
The DW Stadium outfit won seven of their last nine games last term to move away from trouble and avoid any last-day drama with wins over Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United particular highlights of a stirring revival.
However, no such recovery has been forthcoming this year and, although Wigan did earn wins over relegation rivals Newcastle and Norwich and a 3-2 triumph at West Brom, their recent 3-2 home defeat against Swansea coupled with wins for teams around them left Martinez's men with a mountain to climb.
The fans are always sure to remember this season for their FA Cup heroics, but after failing to pull out of the drop zone that success will be tinged with a palpable sense of disappointment.
The disappointment is also likely to strengthen speculation surrounding Martinez, with the Spanish tactician reportedly being lined up to replace the Manchester United-bound David Moyes at Everton.
