Sydney FC defender Alex Wilkinson says the pressure in on second-placed Melbourne Victory ahead of Friday night’s crucial Big Blue at Allianz Stadium.
The Sky Blues hold an eight-point buffer ahead of Victory with six games to play, meaning anything but three points will likely end Victory’s premiership push.
“This time it’s one versus two, a lot of pressure on them,” Wilkinson said.
“Obviously they have to win to bridge the gap between us and them.
“They’ll be looking to come up and play attacking football and looking to win.
“It’s got all the makings of an exciting game.”
Sydney have won both of the previous encounters between the two clubs this season, 2-1 on both occasions.
“The first two games this season that we played them have been good contests, lots of action, lots of chances,” he said.
“I’m sure this one will be no different.
“For us, it’s another game and after last week’s performance at City it’s about building on that and improving again. If we do that, we’ll get three points.”
Wilkinson, who won two premierships with Central Coast and two K-League titles with Jeonbuk Motors, said this Sydney side was one of the best he’s played in, but preferred not to compare.
“I think personnel wise this is one of the best teams I’ve played in,” Wilkinson said.
“I think the depth of the squad is very, very good. Arnie has done a great job recruiting a very strong team.
“There’s at least two players who can play every position. When you’ve got that competition in the squad it builds competitiveness at training and raises the level of training and games.
“It’s hard to compare different teams but this one has definitely got the makings of a very successful one.”
