The 4-0 thrashing by the Germans has left Australia almost certainly needing two victories from their remaining Group D games to progress to the knockout stage of the tournament.

While many are ready to write off the Socceroos, Wilkshire is adamant that the players will not be throwing in the towel.

"We've definitely got the character in the team and the spirit. We know that we can do better. We know there's a possibility there and we are going to be fighting to the end," he said.

Wilkshire said a positive mindset is crucial to the Socceroos getting wins against both Ghana and Serbia and progressing through the group.

"There's two games to play for, six points to get and if we do that we get through," he said.

"We're professionals, we know what it's about. It's a game that we missed out on but we've got two more matches and two opportunities to try and get through the group. We need to be up for it."

Fellow defender Craig Moore agreed that the Socceroos must remain positive and said it was about making better decisions at both ends of the park in the remaining matches.

"There were a couple of poor decisions on our behalf in the Germany game that gifted them goals. They are a very good international side and you can't let teams like that score early in games," he said.
