The 34-year-old, who has 80 Socceroos caps to his name, joined Terek on a free transfer in January, penning a one-year deal with the option of another season.

Wilkshire only managed six appearances for Terek, all in the 2015-16 season, failing to break into the side in the new campaign where the Chechens are third after five matches.

Wollongong-born Wilkshire may be of interest to A-League clubs as a free agent, but hasn’t played in Australia since leaving the Australian Institute of Sport for Middlesbrough in 1998.

The right-back is a forgotten figure in Australia, having not played for the Socceroos since being dumped by coach Ange Postecoglou prior to the 2014 World Cup.

Wilkshire has previously had stints with Boro, Bristol City, Twente, Dinamo Moscow and Feyenoord.

He played for Australia in both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
