Williams was a member of the Barnsley side that won both promotion and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley in 2016.

But he was unable to play in either match because of injury. Now he has his third shot at Wembley on Sunday (midnight AEST), as his Rotherham United side battle it out with Shrewbury Town for a place in the Championship.

"I think it’s just fate really, because Barnsley went down as well," he told FourFourTwo.

"I don’t wish anything bad upon them, but the last time Rotherham got promoted Barnsley went the other way. So hopefully the same happens. I missed two trips with Barnsley so it will be the first time I’ll play there.

"Everyone wants to play there, especially here. Everyone talks about Wembley as the holy grail so it should be good. I’d say it is the biggest game of my career. There’s quite a lot riding on it."

Williams has rebuilt his career at Rotherham after two difficult, injury-ravaged seasons at Barnsley. The winger from Western Australia made just 23 appearances in two years at Oakwell.

But this season Williams has been one of the Millers' key players and back to his best, banging in four goals and setting up seven others  in 46 matches.

"For me it’s been a very successful season,” the Perth product and former Olyroo said.

"I’ve played nearly every game and been part of every single training session. Compared with the last two seasons it’s a major success. What the manager likes about me is my attitude.

"I work hard every single day. When I get the ball I like to get at players and that’s what he likes as well."

Williams is expecting a tight contest against Shrewsbury.

"I think they’re quite similar to us to be fair, in terms of working hard and going forward with pace,” the 24-year-old said.

"I think they’ve done it well, they’ve got a really good balance. They’ve got a good back four, they keep their shape well and hold their ground well. They’ve got a holding midfielder who does a good job.

"But they’re playing four centre backs and tend to be quite narrow, so maybe that’s something we can expose."
