The defender, currently on loan to Burnley from Premier League side Middlesbrough, has not yet played a full international for Wales and there remains a chance for the Socceroos to secure his international services.

One English tabloid speculated this week that Pim Verbeek was set to speak to the youngster while last month the player's agent said they would be prepared to listen to Australia.

Despite the risk of losing the player still being there, Wales said it was not in the business of handing out cheap caps just to secure a player.

Williams, who played for Burnley in their 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Monday, told the Western Mail: "Obviously I'm Australian, but I enjoy playing for Wales.

"That's where I am at the minute and that's where I intend to stay. I don't think I could switch now. Wales have been good to me and I've made my decision to play here. But it's down to Wales to play me now.

"I thought I'd get a shout in one of the last two qualifiers, but it wasn't to be. Hopefully I'll get to play next time."

Williams qualifies for Wales through a Welsh grandparent and has now clocked up 10 appearances at Under 21 level.
