NORTH Queensland Fury's David Williams concedes his injury timing could be better as he strives to earn a starting slot against his old club this weekend.
Williams missed last week's thrilling 3-3 draw against Adelaide United due to a thigh injury but he is determined to be back in the frame for this weekend's visit of Brisbane Roar.
Fury were within seconds of notching their first A-League win last week, only for a last-gasp penalty to deny them three points.
Coach Ian Ferguson was delighted with the players' reaction to the result and Williams is not expecting to simply walk back into the side after being impressed by Fury's attacking display in Adelaide.
"Congrats to the boys for a hard effort," said Williams after training today.
He wants his place back but knows those in possession of the shirt won't give up their spots willingly.
"It's healthy competition for the team. It's going to be a headache for the coach to choose his squad. That's what he wants. It shouldn't be an easy decision (for him)," he said.
"I had two corks in a row in the same spot over two days but I'll be alright for the weekend. I'll do everything I can in training to get a spot."
Williams had a brief spell with then Queensland Roar before heading overseas and he cannot wait to lock horns with his old team and help establish a healthy derby rivalry.
He added: "Last time we played Roar (a 1-0 win in pre-season) we did really well and had a decent crowd too. Hopefully we can start a bit of a tradition between our two teams.
"I've still got a few friends there and it'll be good to play against them and talk to them while they're up in our territiory."
