The 33-year-old will join up with the Wizards this week at the team's pre-season training camp in Buenos Aires before they kick-off their domestic campaign against DC United on March 29.

He told television network TyC Sports: "I am happy. I had different offers but Kansas talked to me first and I respect that. I wanted to finish my career at Racing but I could not achieve what I was looking for."

Lopez, who scored 10 goals in 58 games for Argentina, was released by Argentinian side Racing club earlier this year.

He falls under the league's designated player qualification, which means only the first US dollars 400,000 of his salary will count against the team's salary cap.

Lopez, who was once the subject of a near £27million move from Valencia to Lazio in 2000, claimed he was approached by several other clubs, including Columbus Crew, Chilean side Universidad Catolica as well as homeland clubs Arsenal and Estudiantes, where he started his career.
