The former Stuttgart coach has been out of work since being sacked by Bayern Munich in February.

Magath has already turned down approaches from Borussia Dortmund and Hamburg, but the chance to assume full control of Wolfsburg, combining the role of general manager with that of coach as he did in Stuttgart, appears to have tempted him.

He even cut short a family holiday to Puerto Rico to negotiate terms with the Volkswagen-owned club.

According to reports in the northern Germany city, a board meeting on Wednesday evening has been called to vote for Magath.

He could then officially be appointed either on Wednesday or at a press conference on Thursday morning.

The Wolves parted company with former coach Klaus Augenthaler on the final day of the season after they only narrowly avoided relegation for the second year running.

Magath led Stuttgart into the Champions League before moving to Bayern and winning a league and cup double two years running.
