Wollongong Wolves are one step closer to returning to the Australian top flight after being shortlisted for A-League expansion.
The Illwarra Mercury reports that the Wolves have made the cut which is understood to include eight of the 15 submissions.
Of particular interest will be the fate of Southern Expansion which also includes the Illawarra as well as the St George and Sutherland regions.
It is understood the Canberra bid, the based at 25,000 capacity Canberra Stadium, has also been shortlisted.
Football Federation will announce the shortlist later today with two successful 2019/20 expansion clubs to be revealed in October.
Earlier this month Wolves CEO Chris Papakosmas struck a bullish tone when talking with FourFourTwo about the topflight chances of the two-time NSL champions, describing them as “readymade” for the A-League with “three generations of fans, history, colours and close to one of the best home grounds in the league (WIN Stadium).”
Papakosmas added: “We are very confident that not only will we be part of the A-League expansion in this submission we’ll be the first team selected.”
