Adebayor bagged 24 league goals in his first full season with the Gunners last year, helping his team finish third in the Barclays Premier League.

His excellent form early in the season earned him many plaudits, and eased Gunners' fans worries about Arsenal's future as the club looked to life after Thierry Henry - who had been sold to Barcelona for £16million.

Adebayor's form did not go unnoticed by the top teams across Europe and the Togo international striker infuriated Gunners' fans by doing little to quash rumours of a move to join Henry at Barca.

His time at the Emirates seemed to be up when he suggested in June that Arsenal should cash in on him and allow him to move to the Spanish giants or Italian side AC Milan.

The transfer saga came to an end last Friday when Adebayor signed a new four-year deal with Arsenal.

He then went on to kiss the Arsenal badge after scoring the winning goal in the club's 1-0 pre-season win over Real Madrid.

However, former Arsenal midfield Parlour warned Adebayor that he will have to do more to earn the fans' respect once more.

He told PA Sport: "It's a big plus point that Adebayor has decided to stay at the club. He's a big player for us so I'm pleased he's committed himself to the club.

"He worked his socks off against Real Madrid but he's got to do that every game now. The fans have to see that he's got the desire and wants to play in an Arsenal shirt.

"I'm sure if he works hard and scores a few goals the fans will be singing his name again."

Parlour thinks Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger needs one more player to ensure that the Gunners are in a position to challenge Manchester United for their title.

"They've lost some key players with (Mathieu) Flamini, (Alexander) Hleb and Gilberto going.

"But if he (Wenger) can get one more holding midfield player then it could a be a good season.

"The main thing for Arsenal this season is fitness. If we can keep players like Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott fit then we'll be okay.

"Fabregas is the key to our success. He controls the game from midfield."

Parlour also backed Wenger's decision to reinstate William Gallas as Arsenal captain.

The former England midfielder was speaking ahead of an England v Germany legends game at Sheffield United's ground, Bramall Lane.

The match was organised by the Red Cross to raise funds for the victims of May's earthquake in Sichuan Province, China, where United's feeder club, Sichuan Blades, are based.
