FOOTBALL Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy says Australia’s bid to host the 2018 stands a good chance of succeeding, and is not just a publicity booster.
Speaking at the launch of the FFA’s national football development plan in Sydney today, Lowy said sources had confirmed that Australia’s bid would be taken seriously, despite rival bids expected from football powers such as England, China, Russia, United States, Belgium and the Netherlands and Mexico.
“I’m told we are a fair chance,” he said.
Lowy added that the World Cup bid would enjoy the Federal Government’s backing regardless of the outcome of the November 24 poll, with both Kevin Rudd and John Howard indicating their support.
“The World Cup is a dream shared by all of Australia,” said Lowy.
Australia's bid follows FIFA’s decision to scrap its rotation policy and open up bidding to country's from every continent. A decision on the 2018 World Cup will be made in 2011.
