The 22-year-old, who has six caps, hasn’t represented Australia since appearing as a substitute in the 2-1 friendly loss to Greece in Melbourne in June 2016.

Ikonomidis’ Socceroos absence has coincided with a lack of game-time with his club, having not played at first-team level since April when he was on loan at Danish club AGF.

The talented Australian winger returned to parent club Lazio in June but hasn't been in the first-team frame. Ikonomidis, whose only Lazio appearance came in the 2015-16 Europa League, knows first team game-time is the only way to regain his Socceroos spot.

“It’s been my dream since I was four or five years old to play in a World Cup,” Ikonomidis said.

“Having something to work towards is important for a footballer, especially at a young age where playing is one of the most important things.”

He added: “This season ahead of me in my position I had Nani, Immobile and Felipe Andersen, I had some big players with some big names in Europe.

“I was trying to learn as much as I could in training on a daily basis but now it’s about putting that learning into a game situation.

“I was looking to go out on loan or a permanent deal somewhere. There were wheels in motion to that.

“I’m looking to find some continual game time, get some rhythm and get back my best form.”

Ikonomidis has only arrived back in Australia but said he was keen to play in Sunday’s clash with Central Coast.

“If you ask me if I’d like to, I’m a footballer, that’s what I do,” he said.

“I like to play every second of every day. I’ll do my best every day and the rest is up to the coach.”

Wanderers are the equal lowest scorers in the A-League with 18 goals from 17 matches, and Ikonomidis said he hoped to offer something new to their forwardline.

“I hope I can add a new attacking dimension to the team and provide assists and goals.”
