LA GALAXY superstar David Beckham admits Australia's passion for sport and hosting big events makes it an attractive option to win the right to host the 2022 World Cup.
Australia's 2022 World Cup bid is up against the United States, where Beckham plays his club football in the MLS.
Nevertheless the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star told FoxSports that Australia's positive track-record with hosting big events made it major competition for the USA.
"Any country that is passionate about sport and passionate about hosting a big competition, such as the World Cup, can host it," he said.
"The US are going for it as well and I think they are more than equipped to host a big competition like that.
"It's going to be great whoever gets that but we'll wait and see."
In Beckham's interview with FoxSports' Mark Bosnich, the superstar also offered some insight into the development of the MLS which bears many similarities to Australia's A-League.
The Englishman suggested expansion and the introduction of new franchises was an important way of maintaining interest and keeping the fledgling competition fresh.
"It's important that the interest is always there," he said. "In the last three or four years in the MLS that's been done.
"There's always been new franchises that have come into the league.
"People with the investment have taken that chance of coming into the MLS and taking a risk with opening franchises and bringing franchises into the league and that's the sort of thing a new league needs."
Beckham also spoke about his first visit to Australia, three years ago when LA Galaxy lost 5-3 to Sydney FC in an exhibition game.
"The game put the icing on the cake," he said, recalling the high-scoring match where he scored with a trademark free-kick.
"The whole trip was so amazing. Not just for myself on my first trip to Australia, but the whole team coming to Sydney and seeing the sights and then playing in a stadium with 80,000 turning up to watch the game.
"It really finished the trip off on a high note."
Beckham added about his current trip to Australia, his side were here to perform and hopefully win this time round.
"We're here to have fun and enjoy it, but we're here to perform as well," he said.
