THE RISING A-League stars called up for national duty have spoken of their pride and joy at winning a place at the U20s World Cup after being selected in the 21-man squad.
Fifteen of the squad currently play in the A-League and today they revealed therir excited at the upcoming tournament in Colombia.
Brisbane new boy Danning said he was relishing in the opportunity to represent his country.
“I want to make the green and gold proud and do the best I can to contribute,” Brisbane Roar's new recruit Kofi Danning said.
“We have a very strong side and all the boys have the right attitude, we all know if we put in 100 per cent and work our hardest, something will come out of it.
“I think our first goal is to try and get out of the group stage.
“If we do that, everything else will come together because that’s the hardest challenge for any team because every team is hungry to go through.
“I’m going there to prove to everyone and to show everyone what I can do and play well with the team. If I can contribute what I think I can, we can make it further in the competition.”
Central Coast Mariners striker Bernie Ibini-Isei added: “This is definitely a great feeling. I’m very happy with where I’m at at the moment, I can’t wait.
Pitted against Costa Rica, Ecuador and Spain in the group stage, the young Yellow and Navy stars will have their work cut out for them to advance from one of the toughest pools of the tournament.
Nevertheless, flying attacker Ibini-Isei said both he and the team is confident heading into the tournament.
“We have a tough group but I’d prefer it that way, that’s what a World Cup’s about,” Ibini-Isei said.
“We’ve already done some video analysis and preparation for Ecuador because they are our first opponent.”
Sydney's Rhyan Grant represented Australia at the 2009 U20 World Cup in Egypt and believes the Class of 2011 can make waves in Columbia.
“It is a different kind of thrill to when I made the U20s World Cup two years ago but still obviously a massive achievement,” Grant said.
“Two years ago it came right out of the blue and I was stunned but this time I had set my goals to be in the team and I’m happy to be going to another World Cup.
“There was a lot of very talented players in the last team two years ago but I think there’s more potential in this team. Hopefully we can do well as a team and do Australia proud.”
Club team-mate Terry Antonis, 17, is the youngest player in the squad by six months.
“It’s unbelievable,” Antonis said. “I always wanted to go to a World Cup but when it happens it’s freaky and I can’t believe I’m going to the World Cup."
Petratos was also beaming upon news of his selection after his dreams looked to be fading when he suffered a knee injury in April.
“It’s a great feeling,” Petratos said. “One of my dreams has been to go to a World Cup and that’s now happened.
"I was worried a bit when I hurt my knee. I was counting the days until we left for the World Cup and knew it was possible but was going to be tough but I worked hard and now I’m going.”
