Adelaide United goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic pressed a pretty strong case for 2014 World Cup selection at last month’s East Asian Cup but he’s not counting his chickens just yet.
The 32-year-old custodian was Australia’s outstanding player during the ill-fated tournament where the Socceroos finished last with one draw and two losses.
Galekovic spoke to reporters on Tuesday after returning to Adelaide training following an extended break after international duty.
The goalkeeper has plenty of opposition for a spot on the plane to Brazil next year, but a number of them may not be first choice at their clubs in 2013-14, including Mark Schwarzer, Brad Jones, Mitchell Langerak and Adam Federici, putting at jeopardy their chances.
"Obviously there's a few goalkeepers going around playing and not playing, so in the end it will be Holger's decision but I can only worry about myself,” Galekovic said.
“I still think it's a long way away, it's a whole season away. I've got to perform for my club, stay injury free and stay in form and if I do that it's up to Holger.”
Galekovic also endorsed new Reds boss Josep Gombau who he believes has them heading in the right direction after last season’s dramas which led to an outburst from the goalkeeper.
"I’m happy with the coach and looking forward to this season," Galekovic said.
"I had a good chat with the coach yesterday and it’s all looking good. I’m happy to be back."
