Bailey Wright says the competition in central defence for the Socceroos is healthy and pushes the players to work harder.
Wright is vying for one of the two starting centre back spots against Thailand next Tuesday.
He has shared duties with Trent Sainsbury and Matt Spiranovic so far in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Preston North End defender said the battle for places is a good thing.
"It's what you want in football, whether it's club or international," he said.
"No one wants an easy ride, if you've got that position and someone's on your toes after that opportunity then you've got to push yourself even harder. I think that's only natural, we definitely do that for each other.
"It's one of the healthy things for the squad, no one's safe. Everyone wants that shirt and to represent their country. There's someone else there queueing up to take it off you.
"Whether you've got that shirt or not you've got to work really hard to get it and I think that's what bonds for a successful team and one that does well. So far it's been good competition and we'll keep it that way."
Wright made his Socceroo debut back in 2014 and has racked up 12 appearances for the national team. The centre half said being part of international football has helped him develop and improve.
"Becoming part of here and international football and the coaching here is always going to develop you and add more to the game," Wright said.
"The tactical side of international football has always been known for being realy big. What you learn here is massive. The different sort of teams you play against, the different conditions, you adapt and you adapt quickly.
"I think you learn very fast in international football. I like to think it's made me a better player, definitely."
Wright's Championship club Preston are currently in 11th place, with seven wins, seven losses and two draws from 16 matches. The Lilywhites had a poor start to the season but have only suffered one defeat in their past nine fixtures.
"It's been good. We found it difficult at the start of the season," Wright said.
"I think the start of most seasons are difficult as you get to grips with some of the new teams and players that you've signed. But once we got going we've had a good run and started climbing that table.
"We've had a good run of results against some good sides and we hope to continue it. It's our second season, they say it's the toughest season, so we want to make sure it's a better season than last season."
