The midfielder scored his fifth goal of the campaign in the UEFA Cup victory against FC Twente in the UEFA Cup in midweek.

Next up are Tottenham tomorrow in the Barclays Premier League - and with England due to face Germany in a friendly a week on Wednesday, Wright-Phillips will be keen to maintain his good form.

Hughes said: "I have been pleased with how Shaun has done. He made an immediate impact, scoring a number of goals. His general play is fine.

"What we need to do is not only build individual performances but team performances as well. Everyone has to step up to the mark, and Shaun is included in that.

"He is a more senior player than when he left the club. It is a different coat he has to wear. I think he enjoys the standing he has in the dressing room."

Even though Harry Redknapp appears to have transformed Tottenham, they are still at the foot of the table - and the last time the veteran boss visited Eastlands, his Portsmouth side were thrashed 6-0.

Hughes, however, is not expecting an action replay against his opposite number.

He is calling for patience from supporters during a transitional period, and said: "We are not going to win every game, and not every game will be positive.

"If we do not win games we have to try to take what we can out of them. We are going to be inconsistent, because that is where we at in terms of our development.

"It is a bit of a roller-coaster ride at the moment, because we are good at home and not so good away. What we will do is always create chances and score goals."

Hughes has been boosted by the return to fitness of strikers Benjani Mwaruwari and Darius Vassell.

Benjani marked his first game back by scoring against Twente, while Vassell had a 60-minute run-out.

Hughes added: "It is pleasing Benjani made an impact and that Darius got some time on the pitch. Getting experienced players like them helping the younger ones is really important."

Midfielder Vincent Kompany will again be absent. After missing the Cup victory because of a groin problem, he is suspended.
